Can you use a photograph of a receipt as evidence for the HMRC?
So another short blog today, but again a big question that I get asked many times.
Now, I know everyone hates having to keep their expense receipts for their business or self-employment and is why many people want a less messy way of keeping a record of their receipts instead of a big shoebox!
So a few people have asked, “Can I just take a picture of a receipt on my phone, send it to myself then keep the picture of the receipt in a folder on my computer in case I ever need to use it as proof for HMRC?”
The answer is yes! As long as the image is clear and you can read all the wording on the receipt (i.e not out of focus, or phone moving creating motion blur etc) then you are completely within your right to use that picture of your receipt instead of having to store all of your hundreds of physical receipts every year.
However…Now is my opportunity for a little up-selling! haha
As great as this idea sounds to take the picture, send it to yourself and store it on your computer – there’s 2 problems:
1) What if your computer decides to stop working one day? Suddenly your entire history of receipts has gone forever!
2) It is a very long-winded way of storing your receipts
So what’s the easiest way of doing this? Signing up for a Zlogg account where our ‘Capture Receipt’ feature allows you to take a picture of your receipt and instantly upload it to your account where it is safely stored ready for whenever you need it. Our system is entirely cloud based so you’re in safe hands with all the documents being stored safely and it’s a super quick method of capturing and storing all of your business receipts.
I hope that helps and if you want anymore information just contact me at info@zlogg.co.uk
