How to change your details with the HMRC
Many people are unaware that if you are registered as self-employed or own a business/company then you must update your details with the HMRC if any of them change.
There are 2 different ‘categories’ in which you can notify the HMRC of a change in your details, they are separated into ‘personal’ and ‘business’ details so be sure to know which you require to change before following the links below:
Personal Details:
This section applies if you need to inform the HMRC of any changes relating to:
- Change of personal Name and/or personal Address
- Income Changes
- Relationship Status or Family Change
- Gender Change
What these changes relate to are:
- Your Income Tax and National Insurance
- Any tax credits and benefits (including Child Benefit)
- All services including Government Gateway and the Pension Service
So if that’s what you’re looking to change then simply visit the following link and follow the steps provided: https://www.gov.uk/tell-hmrc-change-of-details
Business Details:
This section applies if you need to inform the HMRC of any changes relating to:
- Change of business Name and/or business Address
- Changes to your business’s legal structure
- Changes to a Partnership
- Changes for VAT
- Change Bank Details
- If you’re Employing Staff
- Appointing someone to handle your tax affairs
- Closing or selling your business
You also must remember that once you’ve changed your business details with the HMRC you must also update those details for:
- Corporation Tax
- Self Assessment
- PAYE for employers
- VAT (you must tell HMRC of changes within 30 days)
- the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)
This is quite a large section with different sub-links which you need to navigate to in order to notify the HMRC of your changes, however the main starting page which you can navigate from is: https://www.gov.uk/tell-hmrc-changed-business-details/change-of-name-or-address
